Special landscapes and refined complexity of environments render the Pollino National Park, the largest natural park and the wildest in Italy, it became in 2015, a Unesco heritage. With its large unspoilt areas that vary at different altitudes, the park is able to offer travellers multiple environments. There are many tree species in the Park: vegetation encompasses holm oak forests, oaks, silver firs, beeches and seven types of maple trees, black pines and chestnut trees. The protagonist and the symbol of the park is the Loricate pine, a rare species (that in Europe is found only in the Balkans), which adapts to harsh habitats where other very hardy species are unable to survive. In spring it is normal to enjoy the sight of the orchid bloom, along with those of violets and gentians, bluebells and, in summer, the rare red lily, as well as countless species of medicinal and aromatic plants, among which the Labiatae is protagonist, with many species of mint, and also all the varieties of thyme, savory, lavender, hyssop, whose flowers blossom in summer creating a delicate combination of colours and shades. Equally important are the various families of wild berries and wild species of trees that produce fruits and berries such as the wild apples, the different Prunus, the delicious wild strawberries and raspberries scattered in paths and in clearings, where the weather and the sun allow fruiting. As far as the wildlife is concerned, the Pollino area is among the most important of the whole south of Italy: a variegated fauna, includes many species that were not able to survive in other mountainous areas. In the Pollino the following species can be found: the golden eagle, the black woodpecker, the chough, the Lanner falcon, the Egyptian vulture, the red kite, the eagle owl, the long-eared owl, the raven, the peregrine falcon, the forest dormouse, the Apennine wolf, the wild cat, the native deer of Orsomarso and the otter. Recently the deer and the griffin have been reintroduced. In this location different sports can be practiced thanks to the diversity of the area, but for enthusiasts, trekking and hiking are highly recommended. The park is a destination not only for lovers of alpinism, but also for those who adore canyoning, rafting, cross-country skiing, caving and mountain biking.
