BRANCALEONE

The name of this small and picturesque village derives from its shape resembling a lion paw (from the Latin branca). The main settlement is characterized by a medieval watchtower. Brancaleone has deserved the name of the town of sea turtles because the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles lay eggs in the beaches near the village. This stretch of coast is in fact the main deposition area in Italy and it hosts a Sea Turtle Recovery Center that has been involved for some years in their recovery and re-habilitation.

Brancaleone has a lovely climate and beaches with fine golden sand suitable for heliotherapy and sand baths. The village offers itself not only as a sun and sea destination, but also a place for fun and entertainment with tourist accommodation facilities, sport centers, beach services and clubs.

Brancaleone has very ancient origins, as evidenced by the archaeological findings in the Sperlongara site. Cesare Pavese, the writer who was banished to Brancaleone by the Fascist Regime, produced his best works here. Along the Costa dei Gelsomini (Jasmine coast), between Capo Spartivento and Capo Bruzzano, a hill rises where an ancient village and a ruined castle stand. The old village is now deserted and to get to the rocky hillock where it is located, the best route to take starts from Razzà. You cannot drive on the last dirt stretch, so you can take a healthy and emotional walk and admire the breath-taking view on the coast.
