FLUVIAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SPORTS

In the gorges of the river Lao, a bioenergetics reserve, numerous sport clubs propose rafting, one of the most fascinating river sports that consists of descending the waters on board of special rubber boats, rafts. An ideal sport especially for those who are seeking strong emotions. Hydrospeed is swimming in water following the flow. In between canoeing and rafting there is the Kayak-Raft / hot dogs a safe way to go down rivers in groups of 1/2 equipped with paddles. Canyoning consists of descending streams which have no viable banks. The progression takes place following the direction of the water, some exceptions allow the ascent. It is an extreme sport that has recently become popular. The great amount of rivers in the Pollino National Park allows tourists to practice it. Canyoning requires minimal physical preparation and those who practice it live in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. The most popular and charming places are Raganello and Iannello, a tributary of the river Lao. Sport climbing is an activity that is practiced on cliffs equipped with different technical difficulties, from the easiest which is suitable for beginners to the most difficult for expert climbers. It requires an appropriate equipment and a variable training level according to the degree of difficulty. Experienced hikers or even neophytes, when accompanied by an expert can try it. Banchismo is a newly developed discipline that is practiced on extremely high partially equipped precipices and has different levels of technical difficulty. It was practiced in ancient times by pastors who were leading the goats grazing along the steep rocky hills of Raganello canyon. It requires a proper equipment, a decent level of fitness and no fear of heights. It is for experienced hikers always accompanied by a guide. Speleology is a sport that is practiced in the numerous caves and natural cavities. Depending on whether they are natural underground caves, or created by men, artificial cavities, we can talk about caving tout-court or urban caving. Calabria is rich of caves and artificial cavities which have been only partially surveyed and documented. They are the Caves of St. Angelo in Cassano allo Jonio (CS) and the Cave of the Nun in Sant'Agata D'Esaro (Cs). The abyss of Bifurto in Cerchiara di Calabria (Cs) and Verzino Caves in Crotone, occupy the fortieth position among the deepest caves in the world.
